Dimitrios Kefalas

Dimitrios Kefalas studied biomedical engineering in Athens (Greece). During his BSc he achieved several distinctions and he graduated with the best grade. At the same time, he developed a special interest in neurophysiology instrumentation, and he got involved in evoked potentials classification and medical signal and image processing research. He started his career in intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) in 2006. He earned a scholarship from the state scholarships foundation (Greece), and in 2011 he moved to Frankfurt (Germany) for his master studies in Neuroscience. His MSc thesis was in brain transcranial and intracranial electrical stimulation for motor monitoring and mapping, and he got awarded with the “Young investigator award” by the International Society of Intraoperative Neurophysiology for presenting part of his work (2013). He did his IONM fellowship with Prof. Szelenyi in Dusseldorf (Germany), where he got specialized in neurosurgical IONM (2013-2015). After the completion of his fellowship he moved to university hospital Mannheim (Germany), where he developed and lead the neurosurgical IONM service. Since 2018, he works at Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in London (UK), the biggest orthopaedic hospital in the UK, with the biggest and busiest IONM team across the UK, providing IONM in spinal and peripheral nerve procedures. He also provides complex brain, brainstem, and spinal IONM services and education in London and across England. He is the secretary of British Society of Intraoperative Neurophysiology (former Neuromonitoring UK) and he collaborates with other members of the society on the establishment of national IONM training and certificate. Moreover, he works towards to the completion of his second MSc, in clinical neurophysiology. He has received funding from RNOH for his MSc and he earned a research fellowship funding too. He recently got awarded for his outstanding contribution as a peer reviewer. His current research interests include standardization of IONM instrumentation and optimization of multimodal IONM to achieve real-time monitoring.
