Objectives : A significant number of blood donors in Oman are deferred because of travel to malaria-endemic areas.
More than 90% of those donors can be returned to the donor pool with the combination of temporary deferral (4-6 months) and screening with malaria enzyme immunoassay (EIA) test.
Negative malaria PCR results in EIA reactive donors indicate a possible previous exposure and provide added safety value for blood centers.
